A systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 studies published between 2007 and 2021 showed that the use of ADHD drugs was not linked to an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

3,931,532 people including children, adolescents, and adults—were involved in the study in six different countries. The median follow-up time ranged from 0.25 to 9.5 years; the majority were cohort studies (n=14) (median 1.5 years).

Observations found no statistically significant links between the use of ADHD medication and any CVD risks in children and adolescents, young or middle-aged adults, or older adults across a median follow-up spanning from 0.25 to 9.5 years. Also, no statistically significant links were seen between the use of ADHD drugs and cardiac arrest or arrhythmias, cerebrovascular disorders, or myocardial infarction. The researchers did not find any statistically significant correlations between stimulants and non-stimulants.

Researchers stated that overall; the meta-analysis offers reassuring data on the probable cardiovascular risk with ADHD drugs. But they agreed that they could not completely rule out the possibility of a little increase in the risk of various CVDs, such as cardiac arrest or tachyarrhythmias, when taking ADHD drugs.
